What is an Active Domain?

The Active Domain concept is protected copyright Daniel Fletcher T/A ginzola.com August 2009

An active domain is a domain name that is being used to intelligently drive the content and/or style of your website.  Typically active domains are groups of domains that share properties together and specialise as individuals.  The advantage is that a large number of specialised sites can be presented for comparatively little cost, and the cost of maintaining and updating these specialist websites is greatly reduced from traditional technology without any disadvantages.  The changes/specialisations to a site can be:

Visual

Active domains allow a single website to appear completely differently according to the domain name being requested.  In other words, a website can appear different although it may share features with other websites in the active domain group.

Content

Active Domains allow the content within pages to be specifically delivered according to the domain specialisations.  This is important to make sure that the content of the mini site is relevant and different to achieve a good organic ranking.

The website www.blockeddrainplymouth.co.uk is a small minisite targeted at clearing blocked drains in Plymouth.

The company also owns the following domains:

www.blockeddraintavistock.co.uk
www.blockeddrainivybridge.co.uk
www.blockeddrainexeter.co.uk

... etc.

The sites are the same, but present different content relevant to the local search.  Other things can be specialised, like contact details of local agents, or brands or information specific to a certain product or process.  All of which now have working examples in the Active Domains system.

SEO Content

All web pages have hidden 'SEO' content that helps the search engines to catalogue and index sites appropriately.  Active Domains add a new dimension, giving the content management system the ability to deliver more targeted and complete tag information such as:

Summary

Active Domains have been developed during 2009 to be capable of almost infinite adaptation.  When used strategically with your business Active Domains will deliver your search terms very competitively to your customers.  Active Domains are not for absolutely everyone, but if your customers are searching for local goods or services or for a variety of very specific things, Active Domains will position you very favourably, and offer a much better return on investment than other forms of online advertising.
